9/19/2011 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM at All Pilgrim's Chapel (Map) (6 Mondays (9/19 - 10/24))
This class seeks to support people of color who want to learn how to meditate. The class will teach the basic instructions for insight meditation. Although insight meditation, also known as mindfulness or Vipassana meditation comes from the Buddhist tradition, it can compliment all spiritual practices without conflict. It aims to free the mind from the distortions of self-centeredness, negativity, and confusion. Seeing life as a constantly changing process, one begins to accept pleasure and pain, fear and joy, and all aspects of life with increasing balance and equanimity. Some of the benefits of a regular meditation practice include stress reduction; cultivation of impulse control/self control; quieting the mind; increased concentration; cultivation of positive thinking; reduction of negative thinking and an increase in overall feeling of wellbeing.
During these six weeks there will be meditation instructions, talks about the philosophy of the practice, homework assignments, and time for discussion and questions. The class will be taught by senior practitioners of color within the rich cultural context surrounding the lives of people of color.
